The Game

Smaller ball, bigger energy.

Boutique lanes, comfy lounge seating and a smaller ball that changes everything. Every shot feels quick and every frame stays close.

Duckpin Bowling at Spinners gives the bowling night out a fresh twist. Boutique lanes, comfy lounge seating and a smaller ball that changes everything: every shot feels quick, every frame stays close and everyone gets three rolls to make it count.

Smaller ball, bigger energy. The shorter lanes keep the game fast-paced, the extra roll per frame keeps everyone in it and the automatic scoring means nobody's arguing over the maths.

Whether you're a bowling regular or you haven't rolled a ball in years, duckpin levels the playing field. Accuracy beats power on these lanes, so the biggest arm in your group doesn't always take the bragging rights.

Real pins, smaller balls and plenty of friendly rivalry.

Duckpin Bowling is one of seven games at Spinners. Pair it with food and drinks, bring the crowd with a group package, or make it a gift with a Spinners voucher.

Duckpin Bowling at Spinners
Smaller ball, bigger energy.

What it is

  • Boutique lanes with lounge seating, so your group stays together
  • A smaller ball that fits in the palm of your hand, with no finger holes
  • Three rolls per frame instead of two, over 10 frames
  • Automatic scoring, including strikes, spares and the 10th frame bonus

What it isn't

  • Not ten-pin - smaller balls and pins on much shorter lanes
  • Not a power game - accuracy beats a big arm every time
  • Not bowling shoes - the lanes sit raised, so there's no run-up needed
  • Not experience-only - first-timers regularly shuffle the leaderboard
Six Steps

How it works.

Duckpin bowling is played over 10 frames on boutique lanes with smaller balls and pins, and your lane keeps score automatically.

  1. 1

Add each player's name at your lane.

  2. 2

Pick up one of the smaller duckpin balls. It fits in your hand, no finger holes needed.

  3. 3

Take your position behind the foul line.

  4. 4

Roll your ball down the lane and knock over as many pins as you can.

  5. 5

Take up to three rolls per frame to clear all 10 pins.

  6. 6

Follow the automatic scoring and battle it out over 10 frames.

The scoring rewards the big moments

Strike

Knock down all 10 pins on your first roll to score 10 plus your next two rolls.

Spare

Clear all 10 pins within three rolls to score 10 plus your next roll.

10th frame bonus

Land a strike or spare in the final frame and you will earn extra rolls for bonus points.

Your lane handles all of it

Scoring runs automatically, so you can focus on the game, the rematches and the bragging rights. There's nothing to work out between frames and nothing to write down.

Want to improve your chances? Accuracy beats power every time on a duckpin lane. Take a couple of smooth steps, keep your arm straight, release the ball low near your ankle and follow through towards your target.

Duckpin Bowling FAQs.

Got questions about duckpin bowling at Spinners? Whether you want a quick rules refresher, a simple how-to or a few tips to level up your score, you're in the right place.

What is duckpin bowling?+

Duckpin bowling is a faster, more social take on the classic bowling night. It's played on shorter lanes with smaller balls and smaller pins, and you get three rolls per frame instead of two.

The smaller ball fits in the palm of your hand, with no finger holes, which makes it easy for everyone to pick up and roll, whatever their bowling history.

What's the difference between bowling and duckpin bowling?+

Ten-pin bowling is the classic version, with big heavy balls and long lanes. Duckpin bowling uses smaller balls and pins on shorter lanes, and you get three rolls per frame instead of two.

The result is a quicker, closer game where accuracy matters more than power, and where a first-timer can genuinely take down a seasoned bowler.

How long does a game last?+

A game usually takes around 10 minutes per person, so a lane of four will typically play a game in about 40 minutes.

Session lengths and availability can vary, so check the details shown when booking your chosen venue.

How many people can play?+

Each lane holds up to 6 people. The number of lanes varies by venue, with 2 lanes at each location except Plymouth, which has 5.

For bigger groups, we can accommodate up to 16 people across 2 lanes. Just contact us to request this when booking, or take a look at our group and party packages.

Do I need to have bowled before?+

No experience is needed. Duckpin bowling is designed for social players, including complete first-timers.

The smaller ball is easy to handle, the shorter lane is forgiving and the three rolls per frame mean everyone gets a proper chance to clear the pins. A regular bowler may arrive feeling confident, but duckpin has a habit of shuffling the leaderboard.

Does the game keep score automatically?+

Yes. Your lane tracks every roll and updates the score automatically, including strikes, spares and the 10th frame bonus. There's nothing to work out and nothing to write down.

Simply enter each player's name before you begin and follow the scores on screen.

How do I get a better score?+

Start behind the foul line with your shoulders facing down the lane. Hold the smaller ball comfortably in your fingers with a light grip, take a couple of smooth steps and release the ball low near your ankle for a clean roll.

Pick a spot on the lane to aim at and repeat it every time. With duckpin, accuracy beats power. A smooth, straight roll will beat a wild fast one all night long.

Do you have barriers?+

Duckpin bowling at Spinners doesn't use barriers, but the lanes are much shorter than standard bowling, so the ball reaches the pins quicker and is less likely to drift into the gutter.

Do I have to wear bowling shoes?+

No. Bowling shoes aren't required for duckpin bowling. The lanes sit raised above where you stand, so there's no run-up needed.

Please wear suitable footwear such as trainers. Beyond that, we operate a smart casual dress code, and sportswear isn't permitted, including jogging bottoms, team shirts, tracksuits and sports shorts. Full details are in our booking terms.

Is duckpin bowling suitable for groups?+

Yes. Duckpin bowling is made for group play and friendly rivalry. It's a great choice for birthday parties, date nights, work socials, family get-togethers and casual nights out with friends.

The lounge seating keeps everyone together between turns, frames move quickly and the automatic scoring keeps the whole lane involved from the first roll to the final pin.

Is duckpin bowling played indoors?+

Yes. Duckpin bowling at Spinners is fully indoors. You can play whatever the weather is doing outside and enjoy food or drinks between frames.

Is duckpin bowling wheelchair accessible?+

Yes. All of our duckpin lanes are wheelchair accessible, with step-free access to the playing area so you can line up and take your shot comfortably. If you would like a hand getting set up, our team is happy to help.
